In the photography industry collaboration is a good way to...

In the photography industry collaboration is a good way to establish networking. I have been fan of Jason Basset and his work and i feel that his edgy but yet commercial feel has caught my attention. I was able to establish communication with him through-out the weekend in order to collaborate on ideas and techniques and without a doubt I was beneficiary of this encounter. Jason mentioned to me about a concept he was working on. I wanted to know more about it and within minutes i received an email with his shoot fully planned out. Unfortunately, i was unable to make the shoot, but i wanted to hear all about it so i asked

Jason if he could document his whole shoot; this is what he had to say…….

Pre-Planning

The pre-planning process is rarely known to the general public and is actually where 80% of the photo shoot takes place. It consists of long days replaying songs like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and UGK’s “Hi Life”, as my brain constantly decides on the mood I want for a project. Since art is expression.. right? I reached out to fashion designer Eduardo De Las Casas. I discovered his astonishing line of abstract pieces from his debut on “The Fashion Show” Season 2 with Chanel Iman. The flow of the dresses and fabrics were unlike what I have encountered. I have actually sent him messages over the last year and a half and never received a reply. I have gone through various transitions in my work and I feel today more connected to who I am than ever. There is still an ongoing battle of style and sense of self in my work as I continue to understand where the soul is, and how I can display that for the world to take. As I look, the world begins to value it for its progression for realness. Paul, who I assume works as his partner in design and public relations rep, contacts me and is very interested in the layout I had.

It is vital to have worked with many faces and different team members through the years. I was fortunate to meet the models for the project. One was Courtney O’Connor (Elite Models), and the other was Manoela Corradi (her friend from NEXT that she introduced me to). I have worked with Courtney before on a swimwear project. As my mind began to struggle for a location since Eduardo did not want studio, I contacted Lauren Coleman. She kindly offered her estate. It’s all in the beautiful alignment of the planets that I met her, but that’s another story for another time. She was perfect for this opportunity, understanding fashion and the style of work that I shoot. My passion runs deep, and I fatigue swiftly when it is unmatched. It’s so important to keep good company around you.

Two week of back and forth contact consisting of; idea planning, mood boards, style of hair, style of makeup, and even discussions of what food will be present in the morning. As I am writing this, I am listening to U2’s “Beautiful Day”. Music is the essence of how I determine what a photo shoot will consist of and in what manner. On my website, there is an option for CLIENT ACCESS where a password is entered and people can have all the information laid out once everything falls into place.

Morning of Shoot

I did not want to wake up, let’s just put it there. And I am a morning person all the way. Excitement was great the night before and I was only on 2 hours of sleep. My fiancée was begging all week to help me on this project, so I let her. Don’t be offended by this misogynistic comment, but.. never give your woman your car to wake up early and meet you on time. Not going to happen! The shoot time was at 9:30am about 25 miles south on Miami’s Private Island. William Beauplant (videographer) and Travis Renaud (friend) helped my morning with hilarious jokes about my blank stares into space.

Arrival to Estate

The spacious, luxurious mansion sits on the water of beautiful south Miami overlooking the Port Of Miami. Last time I was here, I took a private boat to the Monument Island. The reasons these tidbits of information close to me are because of the value they have on my life. Exactly 7 months ago, I was sitting on the top of a Tower Suite in the Mondrian Hotel with Derick G looking at the same island discussing inspiration and motivation. Since Derick is a great motivational icon in my life, I am happy to be where I have been since I encountered his genius.

All of the team came together and we instantly are a cohesive unit. The stylists laid jewelry all over one of the rooms while Eduardo begins to show me all of the cocktail and bridal dresses. William Beauplant and I begin walking all over the house and filming some B-Roll footage for the video that was to come. We scout areas and locate exactly where everything will be shot. None of us could anticipate the heavy downpour. Chantelle Miller, our equipment assistant, entertains everyone and keeps their minds occupied while I aimlessly find inspiration in different areas of the house. Eduardo begins to steam the gowns for the first shot.

The Shoot

Courtney enters the marble bathroom in the red dress. With glass everywhere, I had to be conscious of the angle that I shot. I began to expose for the natural light in the room before I added in artificial strobe lights. I used a Kacey Beauty Dish with a 35 degree grid on a Einstein 640 from Paul C. Buff. I rarely shoot with more than one light. I used the same room to shoot Manoela’s look, which was a dress that left me in awe. It was cream in color, just like the bathroom. I decided early that aiming my light at her was too “fake” to me, so I pointed the light at full power at the ceiling to create a large soft box effect. It acted merely as fill.

We shot around 10 garments. The mood of the story changed as each gown was presented to me. I didn’t want a linear theme and I felt shooting in a way that made each one as if they were shot on different days would be beneficial to the entire team. The campaign was geared towards the first print issue of Linda International Magazine. I made sure to photograph the feeling of luxury and fantasy. As I shot, the dresses got shorter and shorter. My usual style is very intimate and usually with partial nudity, so this was a challenge I faced. As Courtney and Manoela were getting undressed and dressed, I would communicate with my ideas of where I would shoot each outfit and pay little attention to the stylists. They made very good choices and with the knowledge of the other team members, everyone was happy. I trust in each member to do their very, very best.

The piece that most connected to me was the one with Courtney and Manoela on the bed. I immediately knew that bed would be perfect when I saw them get dressed into those garments. The darker color was perfect for the saturated reds and bright whites. I wanted to give a sense of fantasy and a love story all in a single image. I was very particular on making sure every piece of jewelry showed in a pleasant manner and even though you can’t see their bodies, the mystery was enticing. The entire shoot went beautiful and this was the easiest amount of post-work ever. Everyone fell right into place. The team was full of passionate and energizing people.
